Barcelona face another early UCL exit - one that could cost them over €20m

ON THE BRINK

Barcelona are in trouble. After selling off club assets to fund a €160m summer spend, the Blaugrana are all but out of the Champions League.

“We sent a message to the world,” Barça director Jordi Cruyff said after a 2-0 defeat in Munich. A month on, the Catalans aren’t feeling so bullish.

After drawing with Inter, Xavi’s men need a miracle to reach the last 16. They need to win their two remaining games, and hope the Italians drop points in both of theirs.

In the summer, Barça set themselves the minimum target of a quarter-final finish. If they go out earlier than that, they could lose over €20m.

Barça haven’t performed as they’d hoped in Europe, and are set to miss out on the chance to bank as much as €52.7m in UEFA prize money..

A UCL run would bring in crucial cash: €9.6m in prize money in the last 16; €10.6m in the quarters; €12.5m in the semis; and up to €20m in the final.

Right now, though, Barça are likely to go into the Europa League - which is worth €14.9m to the winner, plus €4.5m for lifting the Super Cup.

In LaLiga, it’s been a different story. Barça lost to Real Madrid, but are second. A league title win would net them €61m over the next five years.

And after the World Cup, Barça are in the Spanish Super Cup. That's worth €3m, while the prize money for winning the Copa del Rey is about €600,000.

As things stand, neither a record €1.255bn budget, nor the acquisition of top talent, has prevented Barça from facing financial dire straits.

“Barça have a €656m wage bill this season - they have to reduce that,” LaLiga chief Javier Tebas has said. “If they don’t bring that under control, they could be at risk of bankruptcy.”
