Right now, Lewandowski is the only recruit who’s impressed. He’s scored 12 goals in 11 LaLiga games, and five in four in the Champions League.

Hopes are pinned on the youngsters, but there’s only so much that Gavi and Pedri can be expected to do. Eric García is facing criticism for his errors. 

“Constructive criticism is always welcome. I focus on doing as well as I can. I know when I’ve messed up, and I have people around me who help me.”

There’s good news in Álex Balde’s emergence, though. At just 19, he has played nine LaLiga games - supplying three assists - and twice in Europe.

Huge expectations surrounded this new project, but the reality is that not even Xavi has been able to deliver the results the club had hoped for.

Of Barcelona’s last eight head coaches, the 42-year-old has the worst statistics. In his first 50 games as boss, he won 28, drew 11 and lost 11.

Xavi is slowly instilling the patient brand of football he excelled at as a player, but the prospect of Champions League failure obscures the positives.

On Wednesday, Barça need a minor miracle to stay alive in Europe: they must beat Bayern, and hope Inter fail to win against Viktoria Plzen.
