From Rags to Riches

The inspiring story of Jimmy Butler

Butler grew up without a dad and his mom kicked him out of his home at the age of 13, leaving him alone on the street.

He stayed with friends for short periods until his senior year of high school, when a friend’s family took him in.

During his high school years, his love for basketball grew and was a safe haven where he otherwise had little stability.

At the end of his senior year, he wasn’t noticed by colleges despite his talent, but wouldn't give up.

He played at Tyler junior college before universities couldn’t help but notice him, and he got a scholarship at Marquette.

Head coach Buzz Williams recognized Butler’s determination and pushed him hard, motivating him to see his own potential.

He averaged 16 points per game to end his career and went on to be the 30th pick in the 2011 draft by the Chicago Bulls.

He played 6 seasons with the Bulls, before playing for Timberwolves, 76ers, and now the Heat, where he’s the highest-paid player.

Butler’s story is one of determination and hard work and the power of having people who believe in you despite all odds.

“My whole life people have doubted me. They didn’t know my story because if they did, they’d know anything is possible.”
