The Ballon d’Or gala saw Erling Haaland win the Gerd Müller Trophy as 2022/23's highest-scoring men’s player. He hit 56 for club and country.

Haaland enjoyed a dream first season at Man City, top-scoring in the Premier League and Champions League as the Mancunians won a historic treble.

It wasn’t enough to win him the Ballon d’Or, though - he came second to Leo Messi. Once again, the Gerd Müller Trophy felt like a consolation prize.

The gong was created in 2021 - just in time to give it to Robert Lewandowski, who would surely have won the Ballon d’Or in 2020 had it not been cancelled.

Haaland was utterly brilliant for City last term. Signed from Borussia Dortmund, he scored 52 times in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side.

“[Scoring goals] is my job - it’s why  I’m here,” he said as he collected the Gerd Müller Trophy. Hitting the net is an “amazing feeling”, he added.

This term, Haaland again leads the Premier League goal charts. He has scored 11 times in his first 10  top-flight appearances of the season.

Under contract at City until 2027, he’s becoming more and more valuable.  His estimated market worth is  about €180m ($190m) right now.

However, he’s in danger of missing  out on another major tournament  with Norway. Their only hope of reaching Euro 2024 is the playoffs.
