ENGLISHMEN AT

MADRID

Jude Bellingham is the sixth English player to sign for Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham, who completed a summer move from Borussia Dortmund last week, will be the sixth Englishman to wear the Real Madrid shirt.

Madrid’s previous English players,  who include major stars like David Beckham and Michael Owen, have  had mixed results at the Bernabéu.

The first to play for Los Blancos was Laurie Cunningham. He was a  marquee signing in 1979, joining from West Brom for a club-record fee.

Cunningham failed to live up to expectations in the Spanish capital.  In four seasons at Madrid, he scored  13 goals in 44 league games.

In 1999, Steve McManaman joined  from Liverpool. He arrived with the aim of winning the UCL - and did so twice, scoring a stunner in the 2000 final.

Beckham is without doubt the  highest-profile Englishman to play  for Real Madrid. Signed as one of  the club’s ‘galácticos’, he cost €35m.

Club president Florentino Pérez was eager to capitalise on Beckham’s star status in the media, but on the pitch  he didn't prove particularly remarkable.

Owen was the fourth Englishman to pull on the white shirt. Signed in 2004, he struggled to impress, with question marks placed over his fitness.

Until Bellingham, the most recent Englishman to join Madrid was Jonathan Woodgate. His two seasons at in Spain were injury-ravaged.

Bellingham might not be the last from his country to arrive at Madrid this summer. Harry Kane is in the frame to strengthen Los Blancos’ attack.
