WWE has named the month of June as 'John Cena Month'. In doing so, they are commemorating his 20 years in the business.
John Felix Anthony Cena was born in West Newbury, MA. He played high school football, has a degree in exercise physiology & body movement.
Prior to wrestling, John Cena had a career in bodybuilding and also worked as a limousine driver.
Cena began wrestling in 1999 and in October 2000 entered WWF. In 2001, he trained with Ohio Valley Wrestling.
Cena made his official WWE debut on 27 June 2002, when he responded to an open challenge from Kurt Angle. ...He lost that bout.
Cena's WWE career wasn't taking off, but on tour Stephanie McMahon challenged him to rap about a can of tuna. Doctor of Thuganomics was born.
As a rapper Cena's character took off. He was put in bigger and bigger fights although his first title only arrived at WrestleMania XX in 2004.
His status in the company was clear. His first belt lasted 114 days, and big career opportunities opened up.
At WrestleMania XXI in 2005, Cena defeated JBL to win the WWE Championship for the first time. He'd fulfilled the promise.
From that moment on, he has been a winner. A record 13-time WWE Champion and a three-time WWE Heavyweight Champion.
As well as titles, Cena has won Royal Rumble twice, one Money in the Bank and three Elimination Chambers. He has been Wrestler of the Year twice.
He made his first film in 2006, but since 2015 has stepped up his acting roles. Hollywood work has reduced his involvement in WWE.
His last WWE fight was at SummerSlam 2021, when he lost to Roman Reigns in a high-profile battle.
WrestleMania 39 will be held in 2023 in Los Angeles and Cena should be there. Until then, he'll celebrate 20 years in WWE on 27 June.
