Not only was Haaland's dad a player, but the striker's cousins are also pros

FAMILY

A striker who enjoyed a record-breaking, treble-winning first season at Man City, Erling Haaland is one of the world’s most recognisable soccer stars.

Haaland racked up 36 Premier League goals in 2022/23 - the most a player has scored in a single season in the division since its inception in 1992.

For club and country, his total of 50 goals in the 2023 calendar year puts him behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane.

Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge, was also a professional soccer player. He, too, played for City, spending a total of three seasons at the Manchester club.

Alf-Inge was a defender - and he didn’t enjoy quite the same success as his son. In his first year at City, indeed, the team was relegated to the second tier.

City returned to the top flight soon after, but Alf-Inge was forced out of  the game for eight years after an infamous challenge by Roy Keane.

There are also pro players among Erling’s cousins. Albert Tjaland came through the youth set-up at Norway’s Molde, who Haaland also played for.

Tjaland, 19, racked up the goals at  age-group level, and found the net on his debut for the Molde first team. It took him just seven minutes.

Another cousin, Jonathan Braut  Bunes, is an attacking midfielder for Belgian club Leuven. He boasts more than 60 career goal involvements.

Bunes has told an interview with  the Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad that, when they were kids, Haaland “was only a little bit better”.

Meanwhile, Bunes’ sister, Emma, is a defender for Klepp IL, who play in the Toppserien, the elite division in Norwegian women’s soccer.
