ADREIAN PAYNE

How was

killed?

Former NBA player Adreian Payne, 31, was shot dead in Orlando early on Monday 9 May.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office responded to a call and later identified the victim as Payne.

Payne was reportedly shot while intervening in a domestic dispute. A suspect was arrested on-site and taken into custody.

Payne was a Michigan State Spartans star who won two Big Ten Conference Championships.

His friendship with 8-year-old cancer patient Lacey Holsworth garnered national attention.

Payne met Lacey when the Spartans visited a local hospital in 2011, the youngster becoming a popular fixture at games.

Payne called Lacey his little sister and the Spartans held an emotional tribute when she tragically died in 2014.

“She taught me how to fight through everything with a smile on my face. I'm a better man because of her,” Payne said.

He was later selected at 15th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2014 NBA draft.

Payne also played for the Timberwolves and the Magic, making 107 NBA appearances.

After the NBA he played all over the world, for teams in China, Greece, France, Turkey and Lithuania.

Among the teams he represented were Panathinaikos, ASVEL and Juventus Utena.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo: "Today is a difficult and sad day for the Spartan basketball family.”
