THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN

Martin McDonagh

Crafting complex plots is his speciality. Three Billboards won Oscars in 2018, but not for Martin McDonagh himself. It’s time his originality got the recognition it’s due.

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS

Ruben Östlund

Triangle of Sadness' nomination was unexpected, but Ruben Östlund’s stories are as addictive as they are surprising. The Swede is a magnificent screenwriter who’ll have more Oscars opportunities in the future.

THE FABELMANS

Tony Kushner, Steven Spielberg

The Spielberg-Kushner duo is behind gems such as Munich and Lincoln. This is Spielberg’s first screenplay nomination. No-one’s better placed than him to look back at his youth.

TÁR

Todd Field

This is Todd Field’s third screenwriting nomination: he was also up for Best Adapted Screenplay for In the Bedroom and Little Children. The 58-year-old says himself that he's more of a writer than a director.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE  ALL AT ONCE

Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert

The movie’s fantastical storyline has left Hollywood open-mouthed. We can only assume the screenwriters do understand it. If they scoop this prize, there’ll be few doubts left that the film will take the night’s final award, too.

Nominated for Best Original Screenplay

The award looks to be between the two favourites to take Best Picture, so we can expect it either to be a consolation prize - or, very likely, a precursor to the winner’s coronation as the feature film of the year.
