Colombian catches the waves

In early 2020, Shakira surprised  her social-media followers when  she posted a photo of herself  posing with a surfskate board.

In the months that followed, the Colombian pop star shared her progress as she learned the sport.  “It was this or pottery,” she joked.

In autumn that year, she could be seen  showing off her skills at skateparks  such as Barcelona's Zona Franca.

At the end of 2020, Shakira even surfskated in one of her music  videos: Girl Like Me, a collaboration with Black Eyed Peas.

In addition to learning to surfskate,  she also took to the water in late  2020, enjoying a surfing session  at Wavegarden in northern Spain.

As her surfing abilities progressed, Shakira also incorporated the sport into a music video, Don’t Wait Up, which was filmed at Siam Park in Tenerife.

Shortly afterwards, the singer sought out some tips from Dani García, a professional surfer who is a Spanish and European champion.

In autumn 2021, Shakira was  snapped riding the waves with her  then partner, ex-soccer star Gerard Piqué, on Spain’s Cantabrian coast.

After a months-long “enforced  break from surfing”, she then posted  a video of herself preparing to take  to the board in Sitges, Catalonia.

Having separated from Piqué,  Shakira was rumoured to be dating  her surfing instructor, Gorka Ezkurdia, but she strongly denied the claims.

Now living in Miami, she has this year posted footage of herself trying her hand at wakesurfing: “If there are no waves, we’ll have to make them.”

F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, who also loves surfing, posted a very similar vid on the same day as Shakira - fuelling talk of romance between the pair.
