The best in history returns to competition after overcoming challenges with mental health
BILES BACK
AFTER BATTLES
Simone Biles has returned to top-level competition after overcoming her mental health issues that led her to take a step back.
The athlete considered the greatest of all time withdrew from the past Tokyo Olympics due to a psychological disorder known as 'twisties'.
'Twisties' is having a mental block that gymnasts can experience, causing a loss of orientation while they are in the air doing their performance.
"I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders," were her striking words upon withdrawing from the team competition where she was a favorite.
With her return, Biles has demonstrated strength and courage. After two years off, she secured her sixth world title, equaling Uchimura as the gymnast with the most world championships.
...for this reason, she has been nominated for the Laureus Awards in the Comeback of the Year category.
During this time away, she was one of the leaders who exposed Larry Nassar, a former doctor who sexually assaulted more than 250 gymnasts.
In 2023, Biles married her boyfriend, who, despite being a player for the NFL's Packers, acknowledges that she is the true star in their relationship.
To top off the year, she parted ways with Nike to create her own clothing line with Athleta, which caused a sensation immediately.
After her return, she has become an example of resilience and has served as a role model for many athletes facing mental health issues.
Her presence at the Paris Olympics is uncertain, but everyone hopes that she will be ready to resume her illustrious Olympic career which 4 golds, 1 silver, and 2 bronzes.
