GR8EST

Of All Time

Stephanie Gilmore

The Australian surfer has won in California and against all expectations, her eighth title at the World Surf League- more wins than anyone else.

She won her first title in 2007. It was the first time in history for a man or woman to win it in their rookie year.

She won again In 2008, 2009, and 2010, which led to an unprecedented contract among women surfers: a $5 million deal with Quicksilver (Roxy).

2010 was also a significant year for her as she won the Laureus and made it to the Surfing Hall of Fame- the youngest to win the honor.

On Dec. 27, 2010, a homeless person hit her with a metal bar as she left her house, injuring her and cutting short her streak of wins.

She won her fifth title in 2012 and her sixth in 2014. Her injuries and the entry of Tyler Wright left her three years without victories.

It wasn’t until 2018 that she equalled her compatriot Layne Beachley’s record as the surfer with the most Championship Tours in history.

But that year, the biggest victory was that women finally began to receive the same prize money as men at the World Surf League.

The pandemic and Carissa Moore (five-time world champion) deprived her of her eighth title until 2022, when she won in the final against the Hawaiian.

One of the nicknames she is known by in the surfing world is “Queen of Style.” Her photos and videos speak for themselves.

Her other nickname is Happy Gilmore, because of her signature smile that lights up the tour.

She is definitely the benchmark. She says it’s great that she is considered the best because of the trophies she’s won, but she says her only objective is to motivate the youth to surf, competitively or not.

She is also a model of humility. A video of her showing her house in Malibu is proof of this.
