THE RISE OF

Born into a poor family and losing his mother aged six, he's now at the top

OSIMHEN

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is an example of self-improvement. He had a very difficult childhood, but has established himself as one of the great stars of Europe.

The Nigerian lived in a family with few resources. They sold bags of water to survive. When he was only six years old, he lost his mother.

Every day he went to the dump in Lagos, the city where he was born, to look for objects that could be useful. There he found a pair of football boots.

It was at Olusosun elementary school where his love for football began. He played during breaks with his classmates on a dirt field.

His brother Andrew, also a player, was a great inspiration. After much  sacrifice, Osimhen excelled in Nigeria's Ultimate Strikers.

In the 2016/17 season he was signed by Wolsfburg. After several years and loan spells at RSC Charleroi, he finally signed for the Belgian side.

Lille bought him for 2019/20, and he impressed with 18 goals in 38 games. Enough for Napoli to snap him up a year later and he was Serie A bound.

His first two seasons in Italy were good, as he scored 28 goals. In November 2021, however, he came close to quitting the game due to injury.

He had a collision with Skriniar, an Inter player, which impacted several bones in his face. Since then he has been playing with a mask.

To heal his fractures, the surgeon had to insert six plates and 18 titanium screws. In total the process took three hours to complete.

Despite all the blows he has suffered in his life, Osimhen has never given up. No one in Europe has more goals than him in 2023.

This season, he has 19 goals and four assists in 20 matches in Serie A. He has scored in eight consecutive matches. In the Champions League, two goals.

His goals have helped Napoli to a +18 goal difference over Inter. With Nigeria he's scored 15 goals in 23 games, and won the U-17 World Cup in 2015..

He's lightening quick, stands at 1.86 meters, is 24 years old and is a great finisher. His value is around $70m with United, Chelsea and Liverpool keen.

He is a humble person: "My way of living is to respect everyone without fearing anyone. I just want to have fun and be happy because life is too short."

His surname is no coincidence. Osimhen means "God is good" in native Ishan dialect. His way of living and dealing with things are an example.
