The worst national team in men's soccer have broken their scoring record
SAN MARINO
MAKE HISTORY
In a 2-1 defeat to Finland this week, lowly San Marino managed to score in their third consecutive game for the first time in their history.
Filippo Berardi’s late goal broke the team’s record of netting in two straight matches, set in 2004 against Belgium and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
San Marino haven’t won any of their last 136 games. Their most recent victory came in 2004, when they beat Liechtenstein 1-0 in a friendly.
That’s the only win in the team’s short history. They played their first game in 1986, with their first competitive fixture coming four years later.
Right now, the Sammarinese are on a run of 11 straight losses. They last avoided defeat in a November 2022 draw with Saint Lucia.
Fabrizio Costantini’s side sit bottom of the FIFA men’s world rankings, in 207th place. They’re just behind Anguilla and the US Virgin Islands.
Despite their woeful record, San Marino tend to keep the faith in their coaches: they’ve only ever had seven. Costantini was appointed in 2021.
When it comes to players, only two have scored more than twice for San Marino. Andy Selva, who retired in 2018, managed eight.
Meanwhile, Matteo Vitaioli is the national team’s highest appearance maker. The veteran midfielder has won 85 international caps so far.
Unsurprisingly, San Marino came bottom of their Euro 2024 qualifying group. They finished up with a goal difference of -28.
