COFFEE BRAND
Mexican diver Kevin Berlín set up a coffee brand to pay for his Paris 2024 expenses
MAKES A SPLASH
The road to the Paris Olympics has not been easy for many athletes, and Mexican diver Kevin Berlín is a prime example of that.
After finishing fourth in the men’s synchronised 10 metre platform at Tokyo 2020, Berlín was struggling to fund his career by early 2023.
The 23-year-old was badly affected when the Mexican government cut funding to athletes in aquatic sports - but he found a way to raise money.
Together with his family, Berlín set up a coffee business to help pay for his Olympics expenses, naming the venture Olimpiada Café.
With the slogan “Dive into the taste of Veracruz” - his home region - the coffee brand was an instant success. Orders came in from across Mexico.
Not only has Berlín been able to go to the 2024 Summer Games, but his parents and sister have also been able to fly to Paris to support him.
In the World Aquatics Championships in 2023, Berlín and partner Randa Willars won a bronze medal, narrowly missing out on silver.
In Paris, however, Berlín and Willars endured another Olympics near miss. They came fourth again, just 3.48 points off Canada’s bronze medallists.
Berlín couldn’t contain his tears when he learned the result, saying: “We gave it our all in every dive. The last one was good, but it wasn't enough.”
Berlín still has another opportunity to win a medal in the French capital, though. On August 9, he’ll take part in the men’s 10m platform event.
