ALONSO

The Spaniard is among the favourites  to replace Klopp at Anfield

TO LIVERPOOL?

FROM LEVERKUSEN

In his first full season as head  coach of Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso is working wonders: the Bundesliga club are unbeaten!

In 27 games in all competitions, Leverkusen have won 24 and drawn three. They’re the only undefeated team in Europe’s big five leagues.

With 48 points from 18 Bundesliga games, Alonso’s side sit top of the Bundesliga, four points clear of champions Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen’s start to the league  season is the third best in German history, bettered only by two of  Pep Guardiola’s Bayern teams.

Die Werkself have also reached the quarter-finals of the German Cup,  and topped their Europa League group with six wins out of six.

Alongside their good results, Leverkusen are drawing praise for  their attractive, possession-based  style of play under Alonso.

The World Cup-winning former  Spain midfielder is often seen joining  in with the team’s training sessions - and it’s clear he’s still got it…

At Leverkusen, Alonso is overseeing the emergence of a crop of talented youngsters: Jeremie Frimpong, Álex Grimaldo, Florian Wirtz…

And his good work has led him to be linked with former clubs Real Madrid, Bayern - and Liverpool, where Jürgen Klopp is to step down in the summer.

Leverkusen say they won’t stand in Alonso's way if a big job comes up, and the 42-year-old himself recently joked that he’s only there “on Erasmus”.
