WILLIAM SPENCER'S
DOUBLE LIFE: SKATER AND
Known as ‘Skate Ninja’, William Spencer grew up in Colorado. He started skating at high school, and would practice stunts in the woods.
Spencer started doing live-action shows at amusement parks such as Six Flags. He’d sleep in his car as he chased his Hollywood dream.
In The Amazing Spider-Man, star Andrew Garfield wanted Peter Parker to skate. Spencer’s skating videos caught Garfield's eye, and his life changed.
Spencer says the experience he has amassed as a skater has helped forge a fearless streak. Jumping from a building into a car came naturally, he says.
Yet his role as Garfield’s stunt double for the superhero film still wasn’t easy. Notably, he remembers a particularly daunting 30-foot jump.
Spencer’s worst accident came when a cable got twisted around his neck by mistake. Thankfully, he managed to avoid major injury.
When Garfield returned as Peter Parker in No Way Home, Spencer was able to further cement his status as the ‘Skateboard Spider-Man’.
But he’s acutely aware of the pressure he’s under not to mess up. “Heroes don’t slip up,” he was told when he went on a Spider-Man tour.
A performer who combines action and humour, Spencer lists Jackie Chan, the legendary martial artist and film star, as one of his heroes.
Now, as Spencer looks to the future, he plans to make more viral skating clips - and a feature-length movie based on his funny short action films.
