THE TITAN

The submersible that imploded while searching for the Titanic

DRAMA

The Titan was an experimental submersible from OceanGate designed to explore the wreck of the Titanic at nearly 4,000 meters deep.

On June 18, 2023, the Titan began a dive with five people on board, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.

Approximately one hour and 45 minutes after the descent, all communication with the submersible was lost.

After nearly 80 hours of searching, a submersible vehicle found debris from the Titan about 500 meters from the bow of the Titanic.

The U.S. Coast Guard concluded that the Titan suffered a catastrophic implosion shortly after beginning its descent.

The implosion was caused by pressure that exceeded the strength of the submersible's carbon fiber and titanium hull.

The design of the Titan was criticized by experts. OceanGate prevented external certifications because they limited technological innovation.

Stockton Rush, co-founder of OceanGate, rejected regulations that, according to him, hindered scientific progress in exploration.

The tragedy sparked a debate about the ethics of extreme tourism and the need for stricter regulation in underwater exploration.

On June 11, 2025, Netflix released the documentary 'Titan: The OceanGate Disaster', which analyzes everything that happened.
