Mossad was founded in 1949 as part of Israel's efforts to consolidate its security following independence in 1948.
It reports directly to the Israeli prime minister, and its initial goal was to coordinate intelligence among the various Israeli agencies.
Reuven Shiloah, its first director, was key in establishing ties with foreign agencies such as the CIA and MI6.
One of its first missions was to track down and capture Nazi criminals hiding in Latin America.
The most famous case was the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina in 1960, who was brought to Israel for trial.
In the 1970s, the Mossad executed Operation Wrath of God, in retaliation for the Munich 1972 Olympic Games bombing.
That operation consisted of eliminating those responsible for the murder of Israeli athletes by of Black September.
He has also been involved in covert operations to sabotage nuclear programs in Iran and Syria and assassinate Iranian scientists.
In recent decades, it has made a strong investment in technology, digital surveillance, hacking, and cyber warfare, in which it excels.
Today, the Mossad is considered one of the most effective and feared intelligence agencies in the world.
